Jean Luc Ponty : 'individual choice'

This Jean Luc Ponty CD has been originally released in 1983. It's a weird gem in Ponty's collection because there is a big difference with his other stuff : Ponty uses many textures, many new isntruments and there's the prevalent addition of 80ies keyboards everywhere that makes this cd almost new age jazz fusion.

That's a worthy addition to Ponty's violin excellence. With this release he breaks boundaries, cross unknown frontiers and explore a new world of sounds.
Of course, his violin mastery and virtuosity is here and it's very good to witness how it mixes well with the waves of keyboards and sometimes the electric guitar of special guest Allan Holdsworth on some tracks.

What I like in this 100% instrumental cd is that every track has its own mood and brings special feelings.

The first track < Computer incantations for world peace > sounds really new age / electronic stuff. It's based on repetitive sophisticated keyboards counterpoints. And the other instruments and of course Jean Luc's Violin add really something. Listening to this track is really an amazing experience.

< Far from the beaten paths > is more happy and upbeat, < in spiritual love > is groovier, with a funny use of the mini moog as lead instrument, < Eulogy to Oscar Romero > begins with a mystic wave of new age keyboards and echoed electric violin and it's very mysterious, quiet and peaceful, almost cosmic, < nostalgia > is based on a very good keyboard bass line with waves of keys floating and a duet of violin and guitar of the best genre. Allan Holdsworth and Jean Luc Ponty shows their great talent and sense of improvisation here.

< Individual choice >, the title track of the cd, is rather fast, Keyboard patterns are repeated in the background and there are variations here and there. Ponty 's use of lead violin is back for good on that track.
< In spite of all > closes the album with Allan Holdsworth's second participation where he has the largest part.

So as to conclude my fave tracks are < Computer incantations for world peace >, < Eulogy to Oscar Romero > and < Nostalgia >. This cd is a very good < different > approach of jazz fusion. A good cross over with new age and experimental electronic music.
