CLANNAD - Magical Ring (1983)

Rarely has J.R.R. Tolkiens fantasy world come to life as it did on Irelands prides (well, one of them) classical album. I cant say whether this is Ireland... but Ireland must be a lot like this music.

This album, like Clannads music overall, is magical. One can easily imagine the green forests, cold, ancient tombstones of forgotten people, and all the mystery of days long past in a world that was and never will be again.

Maire Brennans misty voice conjures pictures. Some are light and full of joy, some dark or just deeply sad. Many are of another world and time. Newgrange especially takes one somewhere so far away in time that it blows your mind. Coinleach... is hypnotizing, too. Deep, deep beauty. Never listen to this music in a hurry.

Magical Ring
Date of Release 1983

The best Clannad record is now available again. This exceptional album shows to great advantage the many sides of this venerable Irish group, and features the gorgeous choral feast of "Theme from Harry's Game," one of their "hits." Recorded in 1983, Magical Ring includes a half-dozen originals and four traditional tunes, sung in the uniquely majestic and timeless manner of Clannad's lead vocalist, Maire Ni Bhraonain. Slow, yearning pieces alternate with lively folk-inspired ballads, some laced effectively with rock elements, while the hauntingly mesmerizing "Newgrange" is filled with strumming guitars and a low bass-drum rhythm that springs open with the many colors of the rainbow. Magical Ring is bound to become a personal favorite for many. - Backroads Music/Heartbeats

Theme from Harry's Game

AMG REVIEW: Although the members of Clannad had been superstars in their Irish homeland for over a decade by the time "Theme From Harry's Game" was released in 1982, it would take another ten years before both song and band would be released from their cult status in the United States. Originally commissioned and recorded specifically for the British Yorkshire Television show Harry's Game, the single reached number five on the U.K. charts that same year. It wouldn't come to stateside attention until 1992, however, when it was included on the soundtrack to the film Patriot Games. Clannad finally tasted mainstream success, though, when "Theme From Harry's Game" was subsequently picked up and used to back a Volkswagen car commercial. As a direct result, the band's 1993 LP, Anam, would become its first and only album to breach the American pop Top 50.
Written by Ciaran Brennan, this Ivor Novello award-winning song remains a haunting addition to the Clannad canon. Bringing Maire Brennan's absolutely stunning vocals well to the front and then augmenting her lyrics with chorus, synthesizer, and not much else, the song emerged fragile, hushed, and almost reverent. A mix of beauty and breadth that not only complemented its original master, but absolutely transcended it. - Amy Hanson
