Gryphon - "Treason" (1977)
After the three previous classics, I was a bit disappointed with this album. Just like most other progressive bands at the end of the 70's, Gryphon had straightened their sound quite a bit, and the music had become much more vocal-orientated. Anyway, the opening track "Spring Song" is a progressive rock classic from here to eternity and with no doubt Gryphon's best vocal-track ever. But tracks like the funky (??!!) "Flash in the Pantry" and the horrible instrumental "Snakes and Ladders" does absolutely nothing for me. Tracks like "Round and Round" and "Major Disaster" is nice, but nothing else. "Falero Lady" is better, and sounds a little like Gentle Giant. Personally I think this albums lacks the complexity from the previous albums, and a lot of the distinctive Gryphon sound was also gone. But if you like Gryphon you'll probably buy the album anyway, and "Spring Song" is very close to make the album worth the prize.
