Who is OMEGA ?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Omega is a hungarian rock band, which gave their debut concert at a student club of Budapest Technical Collage in 1962. It was a time of experiments, at which the cast changed several times. At the first years there didn't develop any typical "OMEGA" style. They played songs by the also young english rock scene, e. g. songs by "The Rolling Stones". In 1967 OMEGA recorded their first singles with own songs, which are preserved at the CD "Az Omega osszes kislemeze (1967 - 1971)", published in 1992. In 1968 the first two albums by OMEGA were published: "Red Star of Hungary" in England and "Trombitas Fredi es a Rettenetes emberek" in Hungary. These records are marked by various kinds of songs.

The work became more professional. During the following two years there were published some additional singles and two LP's with the titles "10000 Lepes" (1969) and "Ejszakai orszagut" (1970) in Hungary. With them there were created songs, which developed into classics of OMEGA, e. g. "10000 Lepes (10000 Steps)", "Petroleum lampa (Oil lamp)" and the OMEGA hymn "Gyongyhaju lany (Girl with pearls in her hair)". Just the last named song helped OMEGA to get their international breakthrough, among others at music festivals in Palma de Mallorca and Tokyo (1970). This song was adapted in Germany later two times:

Frank Schobel - "Schreib es mir in den Sand (Write it for me into the sand)" at the beginning of 70th,
Scorpions - "White dove" at the beginning of 90th.
1971 there were a breach in the band. Gabor Presser and Jozsef Laux leaved OMEGA and set up their own band named "Lokomotiv GT". The conflict was obvious far-reaching, it's subject of the later written song "Hutlen baratok (Unfaithful friends)" (1971). The Band lost their drummer by Jozsef Laux, but they didn't lose only their organist by Gabor Presser, they lost one of their most creative musicians by him, who composed the most songs of the first three LP's. Also the lyrics author, Anna Adamis, who wrote the most of the OMEGA lyrics till this time, wrote since them for LGT.

They had to look round for new fellow combatants. Ferenc Debreceni became the new drummer. Laszlo Benko, who played the trumpet and the flute until then, took over his part at the keyboards. During the following years they renounced of use of wind instruments. Additionally OMEGA was able to win Peter Sulyi as the new lyrics author.

The following new start up began with a hard setback at first. The fourth album "200 evvel az utolso haboru utan (200 Years after the last war)", recorded in 1972, was not published. Some party bigwigs were miffed obvious. They pretended lacking recording capacities and missed material stock for LP cover for appearance. But OMEGA made concert recordings with their own recording devices and organized manufacturing of covers from aluminium foils. The result was the concert album "Elo - Omega", which dosn't contain the censored songs. Especially by the songs of this album OMEGA became also very popular in East Germany. In 1973 OMEGA performed some times in East Germany and they recorded some songs at the East Berlin broadcasting studio in German. This recordings were often played in the 70th years, they all became hits and in 1997 they were published on CD "Das deutsche Album (The German album)". The style of OMEGA at this time was Hard Rock. Also the two following hungarian albums "OMEGA 5" (1973) and "Nem tudom a neved (I don't know your name)" (1975) were characterized by Hard Rock. At the B-Side of "OMEGA 5" OMEGA published a symbiosis of Hard Rock and classic music by "Szvit (Suite)". From 1973 OMEGA published albums in West Germany for the Western Europeen market periodical. And there was something else new: Till 1970 the most of the songs were written by the author duo Presser/Adamis. After that the compositions and some lyrics were made in teamwork by the band.

The productivity of the Band regarding the number of published long play records made it to a high standart. OMEGA recorded four albums in each two editions from 1976 till 1980. The Hungarian editions were: "Idorablo" (1977), "Csillagok utjan" (1978), "Gammapolis" (1979) and "Az arc" (1981). The corresponding English editions, which were published in Germany, were ("Time Robber" (1976), "Skyrover" (1978), "Gammapolis" (1979) and "Working" (1980). Additional there were published several live publications and samplers. The succes was great and the style became many-sided. Above all songs charcterized by keyboard sounds such as "Idorablo (Time Robber)" and several songs of the album "Gammapolis" were suggestive of typical electronics-sounds by e.g. Jean-Michel Jarre or Tangerine Dream or Pink Floyd too. However, OMEGA didn't copy others, they only adapted their own style to the very popular sounds in those days. But they kept their own independence. OMEGA showed gigantic multimedia-shows and spectacular fireworks at their concert entrances, every time in front of many thousands of visitors.

The band had to pay their tribut to the high productivity. The musicians became older and new ideas became scanty. Already at the album "Az arc" is to feel, what isn't to ignore at the album "OMEGA XI" (1982); the band entered a state of artistically crisis. In 1983 OMEGA went to a great tour across Europe, at which they also gave some concerts in East Germany, e.g. in Weimar, Leipzig and Erkner near Berlin. OMEGA profited from the works of the earlier albums. There was a gloss: The party bigwigs of "Berlin, Capital of the GDR" refused OMEGA an entrance in East Berlin. OMEGA was become to much suspect for them. The band were exiled to Erkner, a little town at the edge of East Berlin.

Finally it took four years before OMEGA published their 12th album with the title "A fold arnyekos oldalan" (1986) and at first by their own label "Favorit". But this album is sooner shallow than powerfull such as rock music, also the 13th album "Babylon" (1987). In 1987 OMEGA gave still once more a great concert on the occasion of their 25th anniversary, which was published at a VHS-Video in 1993. But short time after this concert the band dissolved (temporarily).

At the beginning of the 90th years the old works were changed into hard cash, as all albums were published as a compact disc and many samplers were published.

In the year 1994 OMEGA tryed a new start-up. There was organized a gigantic concert spectacle at the Budapest Nepstadion. The craving of the Hunagrians for news by OMEGA was very great and this concert became a colossal succes in spite of very bad weather. It was surely not the reason that Rudolf Schenker and Klaus Meine from the Scorpions performed as guests. This concert were published at two CD's "Omegakoncert - Nepstadion 1994, Part 1 and Part 2" and at a VHS-Video.

Encouraged by the succes of this concert, the musicians got down to produce a new album after all in 1995, and what an album! "Trance and Dance" and the abridged english edition "Transcendent" (1996), booth published by Hungaroton, are surely two of the best OMEGA albums. OMEGA remembered to that, what they ever were able to make best: Hard Rock. But a modernized Hard Rock, full of power and also full of feeling. Gabor Presser (again) and Tamas Szekeres (first time) took their part at this album. Presser supplied some compositions and played keyboards and Szekeres played guitar. Booth of them had taken their part at the concert in 1994. At the english album Edwin Balogh took care the part of vocals allone, without Janos Kobor.

In 1998 finally there was published a new excellent album with the title "Egy eletre szol". At September the 4th in 1999 OMEGA gave once more a great concert at the Budapest Nepstadion in front of 60 - 70 thousands people. The weather were better than 1994 and the succes were just great as 1994. This concert were published as a double-CD with the title "OMEGA Koncert Nepstadion 1999" still in 1999 and as two VHS-Videos (Part 1) and (Part 2) in 2000.

At whitsun 2001 OMEGA appeared together with the also in Hungary historic bands "Illes" and "Metro" at the Budapest People Stadium. The earnings were donated for reconstruction of the Budapest sport hall, that burned down in the eighttyth years.

Omega Story

Omega started off in 1962 as a high school band with Laux Jozsef on drums, Presser "Pici" Gabor on organ, Benko Laszlo on piano, Molnar "Elephant" Gyorgy on guitar, Mihaly Tamas on bass, and Kobor "Mecky" Janos doing vocals. Koncz Zsuzsa and Somlo Tamas periodically appeared in the lineup as well. The first album Trombitas Fredi es a Rettenetes Emberek (Trumpet-player Fred and the Dreadful Men) came out on Hungaroton in 67 while the band was still called Red Star. Next album was released the following year. It defined the sound of Omega with Gyongyhaju Lany and Tizezer Lepes. While these two cuts are by far ahead of their time with hard-rock sound, energy, and lyricism, the album as whole does not sound as a mature work yet. After recording Ejszakai Orszagut (Night Highway) in 1970 and staying with the band for one more year, Presser and Laux went on to establish legendary Locomtiv GT where Barta Tamas from Hungaria and Frenreisz Karoly from Metro joined them. Debreceni Ferenc replaced Laux Jozsef to form the final lineup. By that time Omega had a reputation of a progressive band and became one of the most influential bands in Hungary and Europe. The legend has it that as albums were released in other countries it became necessary to brake the language barrier. Besides naming albums, guys started: number them for simple Hungarian words are too hard to pronounce. Omega VIII (Csillagok Utjan) opens with a symphonic peace that transforms into a beautiful guitar solo. Omega IX (Gammapolis) became the most known album (there are murmurs, it was re-recorded in English!). Gammapolis is a fantasy of a dreamed up city of Gammapolis. The cover is futuristic and harmonizes with the spirit of the music. It seems that Omega reached its highest point with Gammapolis and said the last word with nicely shaped Omega XI. Despite concerts and occasional gigs, there were no other albums.

OMEGA SECRETS PART I
By Istvan G Kirkovics

Translated to English by Lalo (Team Gammapolis USA)

What new can we say about the Hungarian Rolling Stones, Who will take on battle formation on September 4th? A lot!
The proof is brought to you by Istvan G Kirkovics

* Grandma taught Elephant.

Gyorgy Molnar, the band's lead guitarist got his nickname Elephant during the peak years of the group. In those times, during a concert when he Dropped a microphone that literally cost a small fortune. That's when they told him:" An elephant in the china store". Elephant is fostering his 15 years old daughter Zita in the same way as his grandma planted in him the basic principles; with real and guarding loving care. In his life there were 2 serious relationship endings but he never abandoned his daughter born from his second marriage.

* He believes in the given words

The basic of his life philosophy is to keep your words. He rather contemplate more on if he should give his word, if that happens he will stick to it in 99 percent. He learned it from his grandma also, who with great insights and simply ways educated him of the knowledge of the every days. They cooked, baked together and enjoyed evening dinners in each other's company. Grandma spoke to her grandson about faith, religion and the arts. Since that he is accepting the laws of the world; the eternal change of the seasons. He believes where there is law, also there is some kind of lawmaker, a higher force who moves the whole system. One of Gyorgy Molnar's favorite movies is Star Wars. These days Elephant Molnar plays the archer but he would never point his arch - that could pass for a weapon - to Human or living things. He maintain his arches himself and generally, in the forests of Keszthely, he practices in the nature the power of the preferred battle methods by the Tatars, and their concentration demanding use.

* Papaci are you sleeping?

The lead guitar player and his daughter always lean on each other. Daddy, no matter how late or how tired he gets home, always tries to pay attention to her. Elephant loves punctuality that's why he insists on Zita being home on time. He finds it natural that she makes friends with boys but he is very careful that nothing will happen with her. At times when the telephone rang late night and he jumped in the car to hurry for his daughter at a party and he even drove her prince home at the same time. Elephant's daughter studies to be a lawyer but she is also drawn to foreign acting schools. She trusts herself, her dad and her will as the mover of all things. The family believes In the words: sound soul in sound body. It happens when Elephant doesn't eat any meat for months, he cleanses his body with rice courses that suffered from cigarettes.

* The Mihaly family keeps order;
* You can't forbid me...

For Tamas Mihaly, the member who became famous as Omega's Misi, family is The most import thing. In the hills of Buda, he retires daily to a house with a garden where his wife Julie and 3 children, Andrew, Erica and Orsi wait for him. Julie is a dentist and so naturally, everybody has sound and healthy teeth. Andrew finished college, asides he is musician, from the fall he's been studying law in Pazmany. Erica is going to Foreign Tourism College while Orsi is wearing out the desks of high school.

* Daddy objected the tattoo...

The Mihaly family was never defied by the parents-children conflict. The first born son Andrew looked up to his father as a friend and role model, he always valued his father's work in critical but objective way. Andrew as a musician, plays "some kind Of computer - electronic music", as his Omega Dad would call it. But how fate is! Some time ago, as there was problem with dad's long hair, now he is objecting to his son's tattoo. it off when he would get bored of it.

* Entirely lost record material...

Not even Misi likes tardiness and messiness, however always the children look for his glasses. Not that long ago, a recording disappeared, which contained an entire new material of music for the new Omega album. Accordingly to Dad the horde of kids were the mischievous ones but accordingly to the children, their daddy lost it at home somehow somewhere...

* The mortal fear in Szigliget

The family's favorite getaway is sailing. If possible, they spend the warm days together and during that time they sail crisscrossing the Balaton. Occasionally things happen when heavenly forces disturb the pleasant relaxation and one of the Szigliget getaway became almost a deadly production of a shipwreck. What happened was, they stopped at the pier of Szigliget to visit one of the friends. A experienced, old Balaton "Sea fox" warned them to hit the road because a storm was coming. While they got down, the heavenly battle broke out and wild waves kept crushing the boats tied together with Enormous sounds. Due to the winds they pulled the boats quickly to the other side of the pier while the celestials tricked them again suddenly. They got soaked in vain because they had to do everything over. Indeed, there were moments when their own lives were in immediate danger...

* Easier together...

Misi tried to provide everything for his children that was expected of him. Whatever it was, caring love or financial help. He doesn't know excuses in that matter either, keeping his own example forefront he warns of the importance of the struggle and work. He bought Andrew the first car of his life but when the child neglected the vehicle, he didn't finance the repair costs. His son was running and laboring until he could replace the car on his own...

OMEGA SECRETS PART II

* Mecky graduated with decoration

Omega's most popular member, the stimulator of the girls' heartbeats, got his nickname Mecky earlier in high school from his friends. Janos Kobor was Brought up in pleasant family environment, he knew his great-great grandparents, his architect granddaddy planted in him the importance of enduring work. Kobor from the beginning lived a dual life, as a capital city boy he spent his summers with his grandparents from Tolsa County. The quietness of the village and with the chance for a natural leisure, the cooking of grandma also sweetened those weeks because she always made the Baja fish soup with noodles for her grandson. Kobor started to grow his hair to the influence of French, custom adventure movies and his shoulder length blond curly hair became a symbol also.

* Mammy went to the graduation for the diploma

The father of Mecky didn't mind his son's hairdo so much, his disappointment rather came when his son first born son stopped doing athletics. Dad never took seriously the "playing Omega thing". Even after the team's twentieth years' celebration, all he said as a sort of forgiveness was; this accomplishment was not insignificant. The legendary humbleness of the star is indicated by speaking about his first university years as prominent times in his studies and keeps quite about.................. .....................................(Unreadable parts) ........................................finished school. As in many other aspects, also the accomplishment was the important thing here for him and cared less for the results.

* Without bonds

The characteristics of Mecky's life are; he lives as a different man, behaves on the stage differently, moves, works and breathes differently in his private life. With his other half he lives happily together since 1966. Their relationship is defied by the honesty and attention for each other. He finds this state of being so natural that he doesn't even remember his wedding date for sure. He is reminded of this by his only jewelry, a wedding ring with undeterminable age. He lives in a kind, friendly relationship with his 21years old college student son who he describes as an aspiring, always Searching and - getting to the end of things - person. Dani is drawn to the astrology and microbiology but lately he is venturing to different fields. He is the student of a College in communication, besides the earlier "daddy-daddy callings", he calls his Dad Mecky now.
The weakness of the two Kobors is sailing. They don't "paddle" in one boat because the kid prefers the fast breaking waives, the dad favors the slow mid-water drifting. The "loud" singer mediates of the life's aspects in the middle of the Balaton on gentle waives...
Mecky hates gloating. After decades he wears the same size Levi's 501 jeans. He likes when his newly purchased jeans stretches on him wet and shapes after his form. Tennis shoes, white T-shirts complete his usual wardrobe. Contrary to the fact that his entire life is accompanied by strong family background; he doesn't like big, crowded celebrations, he feels better within his own close circle.

The oldest Omega child's father

Laszlo Benko, Omega's - always on the go - boss, songwriter, masters of his keyboards, has been living with his wife Zsuzsa (Susan) almost as long as Omega existed. Furthermore, they got to know each other even before Omega formed. Benko played the piano in the Akarattyi espresso bar, when one of his friend invited him to a house party in Zamardi. That's where he got to like a girl, with whom he continued the fast formed romance in Budapest. Zsuzsa's parents, brought up in a conservative family, looked in disbelief That their daughter's chosen one entertained the privileged in a restaurant of the Danube Promenade. When Zsuzsa became pregnant, they got married secretly at a wedding hall of the First District. Later the parents made peace with it and gave their blessings. When the baby became very visible; they sealed their union in church also.
The "carriage of Omega" had been running already when the big day arrived in the Benko's lives. Zsuzsa gave birth to Balazs at the Balassa Hospital just when her husband was giving a concert in Balassagyarmat. The call was quick, the car was speeding and the one armed guard shared the news for twenty forint; the long awaited child was a boy. The new father celebrated this important event with Omega's lead guitar player Gyorgy Molnar, nicknamed Elephant. After gulping down a large bottle of whisky and getting bored at looking at starts on the porch, they crashed into bed. The longhaired boys were busy snoring up the neighborhood when Benko's brother arrived to inquire about the well being of his sister in law. He was shocked to find another head of long hair in the room and with harsh voice he was questioning about the past events. He only lightened up when he noticed the just waking up Elephant's beard...

* Completing each others

Laci and Zsusza understand each other well. The wife's sober objectiveness balances well the openness of her husband and always warns about the possible traps hidden behind his grins. He avoids sensationalism, doesn't attend to press conferences, in the backgrounds he leads his private life. He brought up the now days 30 years old Balazs (he is the oldest Omega baby) and the 19 years old Dora with love. The boy watches TV and would like to resurrect the old art bar called The Nest Club from its ashes, Dora besides her school, follows her father's steps and performs regularly with an alternative band called "Buvopatak" (Hiding creek). Well, as they say; the apple didn't fall far from the tree...
