42 minutes and 55 seconds of uncensored, violent sudden death, tastefully blended with the purest of love.
Triakel's music is understated but emotionally charged. Fiddle and harmonium from members of Hoven Droven frame the voice of Garmarna's Emma Hardelin.
This is simple, small-scale music with strong stories from traditional Swedish ballads (all translated into English in the CD booklet and available as "On-Liner Notes".
"The combination of the solemn harmonium and Hardelin's angelic and intimate voice...is so dark and sweet, and Eriksson's harmonious violin playing provides strength and air that lift and move the arrangements." - Mix Magazine
"Hardelin sings them all with an arresting mix of power, pathos, and ethereal beauty, swooping into pretty curlicues, tactile trills, and angelic breathiness, but as baroque as it gets, her voice never loses the chill of the cold earth under her feet." - Chicago Reader
"Triakel is as pristine as new fallen snow...the fiddle swirls in tight, dark details and when Hardelin chimes in, it's like a storm dissolving." -- Philadelphia City Paper
"...stark vocals, humming pump organ and indigenous violin works 'beautifully on austere, snail-paced ballads." - Minneapolis Star Tribune
"Sparse, resonant and often eerie, Triakel's interpretations of Swedish folk tunes hold a simple, understated splendor, equally capable of stealing your breath and making your skin crawl." - Minneapolis City Pages
"...using intimate yet wonderfully expressive arrangements that potently convey the joy, longing and brooding despair embodied in the source material." - Chicago Tribune
About Emma Hardelin:
"...her voice doesn't haunt, it possesses." -- Option
"...the heaviest singer of folk ('folksinger' is just too lame a label) extant, and she could make you hallucinate in any language." -- Playboy
"...striking, crystal-clear vocals, in her native language, feature a Nordic lilt that soars over the haunting melodies." -- Billboard
About Kjell-Erik Eriksson:
"All of the musicians in the band are quite agile, though (he) is quite a stand-out." -- Goldmine
"...does an incredible job unleashing the talent these guys exhibit with precision, finesse and virtuosity." -- RockLove
Triakel
Triakel is a Swedish folk trio: Emma Hardelin on vocals, Kjell-Erik Eriksson on violin and Janne Stromstedt on harmonium (pump organ).
The group began as a result of a 1994 New Year's resolution made between Kjell-Erik and Janne, where the two, having rung in the New Year together, made a pact to form a band around their violin / harmonium duo by the end of the year. The early results were both satisfying and successful and with the later addition of Emma Hardelin's vocals, Triakel was complete.
The band's name took some time to choose. In the Jamtland dialect of Swedish, Triakel is the name of a type of sweet black licorice. Kjell-Erik says the name simply suddenly clicked in his head after realizing that the mood of their music is black and Emma's voice is sweet.
Triakel's music simmers with restrained emotion. The arrangements are centered around Emma's vocals and the repertoire is mainly turn of the century, traditional songs of the Jamtland region, complemented with selections from various other parts of Sweden. The group's very existence expresses all three members shared desire for making simple music on a small scale, in contrast to their involvement with Hoven Droven and Garmarna, two of the most rock-oriented Nordic roots music groups.
The band's newest release is Vintervisor / Wintersongs (2001).
Triakel are:
Emma Hardelin (vocals) is the daughter of the celebrated Swedish traditional fiddler Thore Hardelin and she comes from a family of nationally acclaimed musicians. She started performing with Garmarna in 1993 and then with Triakel in 1995. Emma finds the songs she sings in folksong archives or by learning them directly from older friends and family.
Kjell-Erik Eriksson (fiddle) was raised in Offerdal in Jamtland, Sweden, he came into contact with the Swedish folk music tradition at an early age through his father Erik. He can be heard loudly in Hoven Droven.
Janne Stromstedt (harmonium) was born and raised in Ostersund, Sweden. Janne, forgoing the obligatory recorder training, went straight to learning electric organ at his local music school. Janne has been active in a great number of bands over the years, covering all genres from hard rock to jazz. Now, his interest in folk music has come to the fore. Aside from Triakel, Janne also plays Hammond organ on Hoven Droven's More Happy Moments..
