Nordan is an inspired contemporary take on the the medieval folk music of Sweden, performed by the astounding vocal talent, Lena Willemark.

"Nordan transforms nearly forgotten medieval balladry into glorious living tradition. It chills like the northern winds after which it was named, while whispering a thousand mysteries. Nordan itself is all over some parchement chart that Vikings might once have employed. Mцller's arrangements transform tunes originally played by fishermen, shepherds, and coutry fiddlers into mini-suites that maintain the songs' natural spirit with droning fiddles and bagpipes, while pushing them into jazzier territory." NORDAN

The Nordan Project as defined by its co-leaders vocalist Lena Willemark and multi-instrumentalist Ale Moller as "a meeting-place for Swedish folk musicians and musicians from the world of improvisation".

The group's music is based upon, but not limited by, the Swedish folk tradition. Willemark and Moller select the songs, some of which are hundreds of years old, and write new material and fresh arrangements.

Ale Moller's unorthodox biography has included extended stopovers in rock and jazz and Greek music on the way to his current, and enduring, commitment to Swedish folk. Lena Willemark, embody's the musical tradition giving it new life with her stunning vocal abilities. Together, the Nordan Project is concerned both with the preservation and the rejuvenation of the folk tradition. The take off for the project was a chance meeting between Moller and Willemark and ECM's Manfred Eicher in 1992 when the musicians were appearing at a folk-festival while the producer was in town for a Arvo Part premiere. Over the next year and half they discussed the form that their collaboration should take and the Nordan Project was born.

"Nordan transforms nearly forgotten medieval balladry into glorious living tradition. It chills like the northern winds after which it was named, while whispering a thousand mysteries. Nordan itself is all over some parchement chart that Vikings might once have employed. Lena Willemark

Lena Willemark has in her musical character two different sources of energy. From her native village Evertsberg in Dalarna she has inherited delightful, wilfull songs and ballads, which she holds in trust as a fiddler and, above all, as the most famous folk-singer in Sweden.

In Stockholm, at the late 70's, she was confronted with jazz. It turned out to be a fruitful meeting which led her to new ways in musical and composing work and created inspiring collaboration with musicians within jazz and improvisation music.

These two sources of energy has led her to work together with groups such as Frifot, Enteli, Elise Einarsdotter and to cooperations with the composer Karin Rehnqvist. The recording projects called Nordan together with Ale Moller has set new musical storms free both in Sweden and abroad. They received both the Swedish Grammis in Folkmusic 1994 and Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik 1994. Her next recording, produced by ECM, will be in September together with the group Frifot. LENA WILLEMARK performs frequently both on radio and TV.

On the 21st of November the first performance of Lenas own composition work "Windogur", a work commissioned by Stockholm - the Cultural Capital of Europe 98, took place. She performed together with Bobo Stenson, Palle Danielsson, Lisbeth Diers, Staffan Larson, Mikael Marin och Mats Olofsson. The concert was part of a series of concerts called "Ladies Next".

ALE MoLLER/ LENA WILLEMARK
Nordan
(ECM)

This duo has done it all, as diving forces to the 70s folk revival in Europe, as experimenters in folk fusion and jazz, as solo artists and as members of important bands in Sweden like the now defunct Filarfolket and their current trio Frifot with fiddler/bagpiper Per Gudmundson. Nordan is a fullfilment of the promise in making folk music into new, contemporary art. Jazz and new-world musicians like saxist Jonas Knutsson and percussionist Tina Johansson and folk luminaries like Gudmundsson on fiddle and Mats Eden on hardangfiddle and kantele, join vocalist and violinist Willemark and multi-talented instrumentalist Moller (bagpipes, mandola, cow's horn, cimbalom, flutes and accordion!) to explore the possibilities. They are many and they are wonderful. Uninhibited by tradition and unfettered by electronics, this ensemble makes music that is as at home in pop music circles as around a campfire. The sound is so ancient it's new again, and the musicianship is as good as ir gets. Palle Danielsson's upright bass finds swing in the ancient melodies, Willemark's vocals absolutely soar, and Moller's infamous trad/arr abilities and his original tunes reach deep into the soul. Every cut is essential, but for you track surfers, try the dramatic "Knut Hauling," the a capella "Trilo" or the original suite of faux-shepards tunes, "Vallsvit."
