Cro Magnon
Bull? (Lowlands 1997)

Cro Magnon is a "new music" sextet from Belgium that features violin, bass guitar, soprano and bari sax's, keyboards, guitars mandolin, and occasional percussion. There are also a number of guest players adding clarinet, french horn, marimba, drums and cello. The music is...well, pretty much all over the map. Neo Classical parts mixing freely with Irish jigs backed by a slammin and poppin funk-master bass player share the same stage with vibrato-laden surf guitar riffs visiting your Aunt Bertha's polka party circa 1957. Yes folks, it's all here...but wait...there's more!! French sounding film noir snippets are continuously trampled underfoot by avant-noise violin outbursts who are, in turn buried by the ever cheerful sound of a Salvo Army brass band playing the Ooom Pah Pah down at the local tavern. Like I said, all over the map. This would definitely be for fans of X-Legged Sally, although I find this to be even more schizo then those dudes, and while X-LS is most definitely a rock and roll band...of the highest order I might add...I would have to classify Cro Magnon as a neo-classical chamber ensemble with a few synapses burnt in the frontal lobe. But hey...isn't mental health overrated anyway?

Cro-Magnon [Belgium]
Zapp (92)

Belgian five piece featuring a lineup of dual violins, keyboards, alto and baritone saxes and bass, their basic sound could be likened to Art Zoyd meets Miriodor, they share much in common with both bands - The melodious sax- driven approach of Miriodor, and the drummerless chamber-music stylings of Zoyd. The keyboards seem to tie everything together into one cohesive whole. Truly a case where the whole is much greater than the sum of the parts.
