French avangarde group from the small town Maubuge established in 1968 by P.Fernandez as ART ZOYD III. From the begining to 1979 changed about 30 members of the group. The base axis of the group joined ART ZOYD in 1971 Thierry Zaboitzeff and Gerard Hourbette.
The band bents on individual synthesis of rock, free jazz and todays classical music mainly Igor Stravinsky. Its form comes out of Kandinsky's idea that every author had to express his own individuality , the age and , of course, objective regularities of the art. They joined the movement Rock In Opposition to resist the commercionalisation of their music.
In 1976 they recorded the debut LP "Symphonie pour le jour ou bruleront les cites" contained 2 long dramatic compositions "Sym..." and "Deux ..." Theme of album is a drastic doom of the human race in the future. It was inspired by group MAGMA.
Dominaiting instrument in the compositions is hard bass guitar which as only one sounds like real rock instrument. The other expressive part of their music are the wind instruments especially trumpet (played by Jean-Pierre Soarez) which sounds sharply and cuts the audiencets ears in conteast with delightful string sound. After this album ART ZOYD paused for fluctuating of members and personal problems. The album was remixed in 1980 for bad technical quality of the master.
All problems solved ART ZOYD produced 2nd LP "Musique pour l'odyssees" in 1979. It has 3 longer compositions standing in contrast of the trumpet and tender violin parts. Together with 3rd LP "Generation sans futur" (arose in Sunrise studio, Kirchberg, Switzerland in February 1980) are the mostvaluable works of whole Rock in opposition.
The next years the concert activities were stronger than before. In European tour in 1983 their visited communist country Czechoslovakia. In this year they published "Les espaces inquiets" based on ambient music and minimal rock.
In 1984 Zaboitzeff produced his own opus LP "Promethee". It is the recording of scenic music for the play "Aeschylus Prometheus" performed by "Le Colectif Theatral du Hainaut".
After very succesfull 2LP "Le mariage du ciel et l'enfer" comes interesting album "Berlin" (February and March 1987). Record contains 2 long compositions with text fragment of Shakespear's Macbeth. Compared with earlier ART ZOYD LP's is Berlin album easier to listening what reflects higher salability of the records that was surprising.
Spent the short pause the group remained itself on the great European tour. They promoted there their composition Nosferatu (longer than 1 hour). It is music composed as accompaniment to film of the same name Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's expressionistic horror. The film (Nosferatu Eine Symphonie des Crauens) was made by Bram Stoker's novel Dracula in 1922. Part of the film was made in locations in Slovakia (especially in Oravsky Podzamok). Composition was recorded and published in 1989. It uses mainly symphonic compositions create by sampling. One concert of the tour was held 15.09.1990 in Prague.
"Les espaces inquiets / Phase IV / Archives II (1984-1987)" is 2CD set contains two older albums plus 20 minutes of previously unreleased material.
Interesting union of three progressiv artist with different opinion about the musical experiment offering 2 easy structured composition with unsual concentration on the last emotional effect is project "Art Zoyd / J.a. Deane / Jeff Greinke" .
ART ZOYD is one of the most important avantgarde rock groups at all.
