Brandon Wu:
Of all the Univers Zero albums, this one seems to get panned the most. Coming down off their peak album, Ceux du Dehors, the band continued their exploration of electric and electronic instruments, and some feel it was to the detriment of their compositions. I half agree: I think the first two pieces on this album are easily up to par with their earlier material, but after that things begin to meander. Both "Celesta" and "Parade" have pretty interesting endings (the former turns abruptly from a relatively pastoral piece led by strings and piano into a doomy, atmospheric hell with tortured electric guitar clawing away at darkly pounding piano motives), but their midsections meander quite a bit and fail to hold my interest. "Emmanations" fares better, but in the end its massive length fails to grip me the way earlier extended UZ pieces do ("La Faulx", "Dense", etc).
Despite the compositional shortcomings of Uzed, in which the band seems to like to take up lots of time playing with odd noise and electronic effects, I'd still recommend it to any lovers of this band - the first two tracks and parts of all the rest are definitely worth the price of entry.

AMG EXPERT REVIEW: Generally conceded to be Univers Zero's least successful recording, Uzed is still well worth hearing. The CD starts quite impressively with "Presage," which has one of those haunting Univers Zero themes, equal parts lyrical and dramatic, and is certainly the equal of anything else in the Univers Zero oeuvre. Subsequent tracks, though, are rather nondescript. One problem is that the band, with only drummer Denis and bassist Genet left from the original lineup, is beginning to move away from the acoustic chamber music of prior releases (especially those immediately preceding Ceux Du Dehors), and toward a more contemporary progressive rock sound, with electric guitars and prominent synthesizers. All compositions are penned by Denis, and the usual Univers Zero precision is evident in the execution of the scores, but the instrumental voicings seem a little tentative, and the mix is somewhat muddy, even on the excellent first track. The last long track, "Emanations," also has its moments, but on the whole, Uzed lacks a full measure of the high drama and musical tension that is so much a part of the Univers Zero sound. - William Tilland
