By now we all know the story. Arcturus, a supergroup composed of some of Norway's most infamous Black Metal players (infamous more for their musical excesses rather than criminal) have set about recording albums with eclectic mixes of metal, jazz, twisted operatics, dark atmosphere and bounding with avant-garde insanity. Given the technical abilities and the backgrounds of the band members it should be expected that this would be full of off-the-wall ideas and conveyed with outstanding execution. It meets and exceeds those expectations.
The atmosphere and schizophrenia of this album alone makes it compelling and a standout in it's field. The layers of sounds from subdued electronica (that points directly to latter day Ulver), duelling strings and guitars, vocal interplay with it's heightened dramatics and sometimes downright insanity, rattling and constantly shifting percussion...these things all add up to make the experience incredibly deep and unusual, after a while you won't even blink an eye when the drum'n'bass break shows up in 'The Chaos Path'. From the listeners' perspective this can be quite a daunting listen at first, each song is full of changes and the twists and turns can often be quite abrupt. However with each listen the album becomes more cohesive and stronger as the ideas sink in and you're hit with the realisation that the music actually flowing. There are also genuinely catchy parts to the music that, on the first few listens, draw the listener in for a smack around the head with the avant-garde stick.
Completely individual and stunning, this is recommended for people who want a challenge, simply.

As everyone already knows by now, Arcturus is the Black Metal supergroup consisting of, among others, Garm from Ulver and Hellhammer from Mayhem. Instead of being a conventional Black Metal band, Arcturus have broken musical boundaries and pushed the genre to its limits.
The biggest difference between this and their previous opus, "La Masquerade Infernale" is that they have ditched the random, often rambling song structure and refined their sound with a much more focused approach. This is what will determine which album you prefer, and I personally feel that 'The Sham Mirrors' is a superior album. Yet this does not mean that they've gone boring. To me, 'La Masquerade Infernale' often seemed full of ideas and hints of genius, yet often broken down into a clumsy mess. With 'The Sham Mirrors' they have managed to forge these ideas together into perfectly flowing music.
There is a lot of variety on this album. Opener "Kinetic" is an epic journey through many different styles of music, whilst "Radical Cut", featuring guest vocals from Ihsahn of Emperor, reminds you of their Black Metal roots. So, how do you describe music as unique and original as this? Well, imagine a cross between every Ulver album so far, and you would not be far off. The keyboards and guitars complement each other fantastically, the vocals are probably the best Garm has ever done, and the drumming is as good as we've come to expect from Hellhammer.
If this, as is rumoured, is the last Arcturus album, then it is a brilliant swansong and a fine way to go out. If it isn't...well, I can't wait to hear what they come up with next. This proves that there is still originality left in Black Metal.

Arcturus "La Masquerade Infernale" 1997 Misanthropy
The second album from the Norweigan supergroup, but with a completely different approach
from their last album "Aspera Hiems Symphonia". First of all, they went through some line-up
changes. They brought in a new guitarist, Simen Hestneas (Borknagar) for extra vocals (he even does lead on a song) and about a page of extra musicians. I knew at this point that I would be in for a ride. So with my ticket in hand, I borded the train entitled "La Masquerade Infernale".
I cannot even begin to tell you the mind blowing experience I have had with this album. Garm has one to clean vocals, that are very low (almost talking) and bring a whole new aspect to
Arcturus's music. Hellhammer is perfect as usual, and the guitars stand out a lot more with nice technical riffing that seems to cut through the songs. Sverd is still strong on keyboards and is one of the reasons this album is such a strong one, but you can't forget the other guest musicians on this page playing violins and trumpets among other insturments. Simen Hesatnaes has incredible vocal ability, which shines on this album, doing backup on "Master of Disguise", "Painting My Horror" and even singing an incredible lead on "The Chaos Path". Easily my favorite song on the album. It also sounds almost carnival like with the keyboards playing around with different passages and Hestnaes fluctuating his voice in amazing ways. Not to mention, the end of the song shows a techno beat to mix things up a little. The rest of the album shows many different changes style, with Sverd playing some swing like keyboard parts and one of my favorite intros to a song on "Of Nails And Sinners" with a stylish keyboard chime, rimshot intro.
This is one of the most elaborate and incredible albums I have ever heard. Arcturus has followed up their debut with a masterpeice that ranks at the top. If you don't have this album, you should be dead.

La Masquerade Infernale

The black metal scene in 1997 suffered, or was granted, one of the most profound ruptures to grace the metal world. It's hard to recapture just how surreal Arcturus's groundbreaking La Masquerade Infernale was back then, despite being there to witness it. In all the proliferation of a familiar, undemanding second-generation scene, the shock of turning around and realizing what a genre-bending vortex of madness had opened behind us was exhilarating now as it is exhilarating then. Arcturus's debut album had been a sophisticated, grandiose album that had impressed but not shattered minds, and certainly no warning of the brilliant creative wellspring that was going to erupt beneath them in the course of their career.
So what can we value Arcturus's La Masquerade Infernale as? A pneumatic drill applied to the fragile strata of conservative extreme music? To some, the cynical weed that habitually, and with palpable relish, creeps around each slab of concrete that conservative black metal piles on top of it and leaves a distinctive trail of roots and cracks across an already blemished surface? Now that black metal is generally domesticated dissent rather than revolutionary medium, so that even the average 'experimental' band is merely dabbling in stylistic tokenism, the presence of such a band so constructively, productively irreverent as Arcturus cannot go unnoticed or without applause. But once the shock of the seamless stylistic ecumenicism wore off, Arcturus stood above other similarly minded acts by the sheer quality of the songwriting. Deny "Alone" or "The Throne of Tragedy" at your peril. Songs of this calibre go to prove the essential transitional quality of music genres, taking excellently crafted little masterpieces and maintaining them throughout the playful eclecticism of their component parts, as if to show that however many conflicting styles they layer over the songs they can no more disguise their quality than a chameleon may physically become the environment it mimics.
In this, Arcturus are the best musical deterrent for the drive to musically sectionalise bands into styles that I have encountered thus far, a beneficial scene-emetic if ever there was one. While a band such as Nile may sound distinctive, for example, their character is dependent on an annexation of basic death metal and therefore they are specifically rather than globally innovative. Arcturus, however, suggest a redefinition of the term innovation in order to distinguish between the global and the specific in a whole new way. As Garm himself takes pleasure in saying, these boys run the gamut with grace.
La Masquerade Infernale was one of the first records that really made me take off my tinted glasses and pay attention to the music in different respects and for different reasons than I always had before. There is no clear, easily digested and accessible rhetoric, and the music doesn't seem to be consciously rendering a dialectic with the listener as it was on Ulver's similarly experimental Themes album. The message of the music does not even seem a message per se but a presentation of an argument so epic that to provide even minimal support to one viewpoint is to inexcusably dumb down and misrepresent the argument itself. I could wonder whether Arcturus feel that they have made their overt philosophies plain enough that they can now use music to communicate other things, rather than a deliberate dialectic underpinning to their music. Their declarations of Faustian spirit still seem to suggest the latter, unlike for example Ulver's Perdition City, that seems to encapsulate the former.
All in all, all these factors make La Masquerade Infernale one of the most relevant, energized and powerfully dark albums of the last decade, easily eclipsing lesser 'experimental' artists as mere amateurs. Now apparently fragmented following a valedictory "final" release, whatever the future holds for Arcturus, I know two things: one, to expect the unexpected, and two, that whatever happens they will have left an indelible imprint on my mind.

Наверное, уже из звездного состава ясно, что музыка Arcturus является элитарной в своем классе. Банда исполняет Symphonic Black Gothic Metal, причем отменного качества. Небыстрый, профессионально сыгранный и ублажающий душу материал доставит неимоверно большую порцию металического наслаждения всем ценителям действительно серьезной музыки. Огромное количество завораживающих гитарных рифов, обильно сдобренных атмосферными семплами и разнообразными f/x такими, как: порывы ветра, звуки природы, превращают музыку в теплую вуаль, покрывающей душу слушателя и дарующей тепло и гармонию. Группа использует различные виды вокалов: от стандартного блекового grim'a до чистого распевистого пения. Я могу с уверенностью заявить, что "Aspera Hiems Symfonia" является бриллиантовой работой, которую стоит приобрести без тени сомнения.

Очень интересно: Arcturus кардинально сменили свою музыкальную концепцию. От прежнего Symphonic Black Gothic Metal здесь не осталось и следа. В техническом аспекте музыка группы стала очень запутанной и разношерстной. Группа начала использовать скрипки, виолончели, флейты; появились новые виды вокалов: чистый, высокий, мрачный, блеющий - мужские и женский голос. Если характеризовать музыкальное направление, в котором очутилась группа, то я назову его Progressive Gothic Doom Metal. Это тот стиль, в котором музыка неоднократно меняется в течение каждого трека от типичной для Метал сцены до оркестрово-классических <выкрутасов>. Я не очень удивился развитию событий в этом направлении. В Arcturus'e многим заправляет Garm - старый любитель экспериментов (поле его деятельности наглядно демонстрируют метаморфозы Ulver'a). Временами металический саунд полностью заменяется классическим звучанием, что идеально разбавляет сухость одного стиля, позволяя лишний раз удивляться, как многогранен может быть Heavy Metal. Эксперименты Arcturus'а так же напомнили мне группу Sadness. Сравните их раннее творчество и альбом ":Celebrate". На лицо/ухо факт движения от брутализма к прогрессиву! Я, конечно, советую прослушать "La Masquerade Infernale" перед покупкой, но знайте это достойная работа.

Эксперименты продолжаются и не просто эксперименты, а я бы даже сказал революционные преобразования. На данной работе представлены ремиксы песен раннего творчества группы. Что ж давайте по-порядку: первый трек представляет собой чисто классическую (оркестровую) музыку без тяжмета и вокала. Второй трек - являет собой наичистейщий техно Industrial, под который можно даже танцевать на дискотеке.
- музыка в духе Front Line Essembly - некий экспериментальный техногенно-нойзовый Industrial. - Doom Rock, выполненный в лучших тардициях предыдущего альбома "La Masquerade Infernale" с чистым мужским вокалом. - экспериментальная обработка, включающая в себя элементы дебютного релиза группы, альбома "La Masquerade Infernale" + электронные <фишки>. - усовершенствованный Hellhammer'ом вариант песни с одноименного альбома. Ну, добавил он несколько новых семплов и продлил звучание трека на минуту, но чего-то кардинально нового абсолютно не внес. напомнила мне столь популярную сегодня группу Gorillaz с их попсовым Hip-Hop'ом. типичная филосовско-атмосферная композиция Garm'a коих в изобилии можно услышать на Ulver's . - экспериментальный Ambient Industrial. Ну и заключительный трек изображает нечто отдаленно напоминающее звучание оркестра. Лично мне не пришлись по вкусу эти эксперименты, потому как они являются слишком радикальными. Альбому "And The Deception Circus Disguised Masters" не хватает таких характеристик, как целостность структуры и логическая связь между компонентами.
ARCTURUS (Norway)
Arcturus это группа из Норвегии, точные сведения найти оказалось затруднительно, но всё же: Garm (вокалист Ulver'a), не менее известный барабанщик Hellhammer (из легендарной группы Mayhem), клавишник Sverd и гитарист August записали (с поддержкой гитариста Skoll из Ulver'a) в 1996 году очаровательную пластинку .
Доводилось ли Вам, о драгоценный читатель, когда-нибудь замерзать в Холодной Снежной Равнине под Голос Северного Ветра? Так вот, прослушав сие произведение () Вы ощутите всю гамму тех чувств, которую приносит в стремительной вьюге Симфония Суровой Зимы.
Короче? Это высокотехничный (в отличии от всяких там Burzum и Marduk), очень мелодически сложный symphonic black metal. Морозящий звук гитары ("жужжание") перемешивается с работой клавишных и делит с ними лидирующую роль. Помимо классического блэкового вокала (карканья?) Garm поёт ещё и очень красивым чистым голосом (так же, как и в Ulver'е), по-моему, это здорово. Немного напоминает Ulver...
В 1997 году группа создаёт новый альбом . На этот раз участвовало несколько больше музыкантов, чем на предыдущем. В общем, получилась высоко качественная музыка, но этот альбом выполнен в свежем стиле. Во-первых, на нем не найти каркающего вокала (сначала это, конечно, непривычно, привыкаешь позже (это пояснение относится к уже искушённому слушателю)) теперь он скорее оперный, причём во многих местах поют несколько вокалистов одновременно, изменился вообще весь звук (от очень тихих акустических проигрышей на флейте и виолончели плавно переходит, порой, в совершенно психопатические тяжёлые black'овые риффы), непременно хочется отличить мастерство Sverd'а. Вся работа пропитана своеобразным эпическим духом, гордые и в то же время депрессивные мелодии передают атмосферу Вечного Падения и Одиночества. Вот он, настоящий Black Metal! После выхода этого альбома многие другие команды остались далеко позади Arcturus.
На этом история не заканчивается в 1999 они выпустили новый альбом ремиксов на свои собственные композиции . Очень трудно сказать что-либо однозначное и конкретное про эту работу... смесь предыдущего (1997) и Techno-Rave, впрочем в этой терминологии я не силён... Нужно сказать, что Arcturus снова удалось создать нечто оригинальное и думаю скоро последует целая серия аналогичных работ среди подражателей... Кстати, Ulver'99 и The Kovenant'99 (в прошлом Covenant) насыщены аналогичными идеями, что и не удивительно, т. к. во всех этих группах 'перкрёстные' составы.
Помимо Arcturus музыканты участвовали в других проектах: Sverd - играл в Ulver и принимал участие в записи CD '95 и Covenant '98. Garm - вокалист в Ulver (по крайней мере до 1996 года включительно). Hellhammer - бессменный барабанщик в Mayhem, Covenant '98'99.

"Мы стали ощутимо взрослее как музыканты и не можем потакать вкусам каждого. Музыка Arcturus очень современна и указывает пути развития металлического жанра в будущем. И дело даже не в том, что мы изменили свой стиль, мы просто делаем великолепную музыку" - высказывание господина Hellhammer'a.
Авангардная Sympho-Black Metal опера, звучащая полифонично, исполненная артистично и изрядно всех удивившая при том, что на сей момент экспериментов в подобном направлении уже хватало:. Этот альбом - один из тех, про которые говорят, что они выходят за рамки стиля, тем самым расширяя эти рамки в совершенно непредсказуемом направлении.
Если попытаться охарактеризовать это стилистически - получится Electro-Gothic/Black совершенно оригинальный и непредсказуемый, с такими поворотами, что за голову может схватиться любой, даже искушенный эстет. При прослушивании ассоциируется, с одной стороны, с грандами жанра, по типу Limbonic Art, но с другой - совершенно неожиданно с Portishead. Это бесполезно описывать, надо просто слушать, обязательно с начала до конца и на одном дыхании. Тогда станет ясной причина всех восторгов критики. Группа это действительно заслужила.
Очень серьезная, красивая и качественная музыка, возможно, это просто гениальный альбом. Гениальный и совершенный. Вот это настоящее Искусство! Странное дело, все проекты Garm'a - (ULVER, а кстати Arcturus это не его самоличный проект, а наоборот Arcturus, скорее проект Hellhammer'а из MAYHEM), но, тем не менее, получаются неординарным и оригинальными.
