What one simple word could I use when describing LACUNA COIL? Amazing, would be the first to enter my mind. When I was first introduced to them over a year ago, I knew I was hearing something quite special. After being sent the MP3 "My Wings", I caught myself listening to it repeatedly. This is saying a lot on my part, because I have never been the type to listen to one song over and over. I was captivated by it, and desperate to hear more of them.
A few weeks later, I found "Unleashed Memories" at a small CD store. After my first complete listen, I knew that I had to get my hands on the rest of their material. Which brings me to the second LACUNA COIL album that became a part of my collection: "In A Reverie".

Sadly, I have to say that I felt it was a step backwards from the intensity I felt from "Unleashed Memories". However, I did keep in mind that this was only their second release, and they had two years to develop before the release of "Unleashed Memories". I decided to wait and give "In A Reverie" another chance. During its second rotation, it grew on me, and I began to pick up bits and pieces that I had missed the first time around. By the end of "Falling Again" I felt that "In A Reverie" was just as incredible, if not better than "Unleashed Memories."

Even though "In A Reverie" is quite catchy, at the same time each song has the ability to strike a different emotional chord with almost anyone. The guitars on the album, although heavy, produce melodies that fit together and flow perfectly. The drums, while not too complicated or technical, are still something to pay special attention to. Finally, the aggressive tones of Andrea Ferro combined with the stunning vocal talents of Cristina Scabbia fit in perfectly to finish out this album's musical equation.

LACUNA COIL have come a long way since the release of their self-titled debut EP in 1998. Although "In A Reverie" is an extraordinary piece of work, don't be surprised if you feel a little "cheated" while listening to this album for the first time. Especially if all you've heard are more recent selections. (IE: "Unleashed Memories" or "Comalies") Don't be afraid to give the album another chance. You might change your opinion.
