Kind of Blue
Date of Release Mar 2, 1959 - Apr 22, 1959
Styles Hard Bop, Modal Music
Kind of Blue isn't merely an artistic highlight for Miles Davis, it's an album that towers above its peers, a record generally considered as the definitive jazz album, a universally acknowledged standard of excellence. Why does Kind of Blue posses such a mystique? Perhaps because this music never flaunts its genius. It lures listeners in with the slow, luxurious bass line and gentle piano chords of "So What." From that moment on, the record never really changes pace - each tune has a similar relaxed feel, as the music flows easily. Yet Kind of Blue is more than easy listening. It's the pinnacle of modal jazz - tonality and solos build from the overall key, not chord changes, giving the music a subtly shifting quality. All of this doesn't quite explain why seasoned jazz fans return to this record even after they've memorized every nuance. They return because this is an exceptional band - Miles, Coltrane, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderly, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb - one of the greatest in history, playing at the peak of its power. As Evans said in the original liner notes for the record, the band did not play through any of these pieces prior to recording. Davis laid out the themes before the tape rolled, and then the band improvised. The end results were wondrous and still crackle with vitality. Kind of Blue works on many different levels. It can be played as background music, yet it amply rewards close listening. It is advanced music that is extraordinarily enjoyable. It may be a stretch to say that if you don't like Kind of Blue, you don't like jazz - but it's hard to imagine it as anything other than a cornerstone of any jazz collection. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine

So What
Composed By Miles Davis
Performed By Davis, Miles
AMG REVIEW: Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is of course one of the landmarks of modern music. More people have heard it than any other jazz record, and it's five pieces are music are amongst the most ubiquitous in jazz. "So What" opens the album, and it's arguably it's most distinctive piece. With a long introduction from bassist Paul Chambers culminating in Davis' quintessential modal, minimalist solo, "So What" has become something of a blue print for all modal jazz. Indeed, the track is so laid back, thanks mostly to Jimmy Cobb's drumming, that it's the very essence of "cool jazz". The rhythmic style is very free, and although the structure is simple, it reveals new complexities and subtleties in each listen. - Thomas Ward
Freddie Freeloader
Composed By Miles Davis
Performed By Davis, Miles
AMG REVIEW: "Freddie Freeloader", like much of Kind of Blue is a study of rhythmic and melodic simplicity. Davis states the opening theme, then the musicians take it in turns to improvise, in the most gentile and understated way. It's really a joy to hear pianist Wynton Kelly playing with this economy, and indeed Coltrane's saxophone solo mid-way through is a revelation. The melody is incredibly simple, and so is much of the playing, but it's effect is extraordinarily beautiful. As with many of Miles Davis' albums, it is hard to dissimilate the work track by track, and it's necessary to see "Freddie Freeloader" as an 'answer' to the preceding &So What". - Thomas Ward
Blue in Green
Composed By Miles Davis
Performed By Davis, Miles
AMG REVIEW: "Blue in Green" is arguably the most beautiful piece of music on Kind of Blue. The ensemble playing reaches new levels of subtlety and transcendence, and the work benefits greatly from the introduction of pianist Bill Evans, one of Miles Davis' greatest collaborators. Indeed, his piano part is magnificent, and his solo is a masterpiece of his unrivalled lyricism. The tempo of the tune is audaciously slow, and it's easy for the listener to think that it will fall apart at any moment. It doesn't, however, due to the genius of the ensemble. "Blue in Green" is also a greatly important piece; it shows that the values of "cool jazz" can have huge artistic value - it's not just laid-back music for the sake of it, it's music of extraordinary depth of feeling. - Thomas Ward
All Blues
Composed By Miles Davis
Performed By Davis, Miles
AMG REVIEW: "All Blues" is somewhat of an oddity on Kind of Blue - it's played in 6/8 time played in the standard blues form of 12 measures. "All Blues" nevertheless is based on modal improvisation, and Davis' own free melodic conception. "All Blues" was a live staple throughout much of Davis' career, and it's easy to see why - the tune is built upon the melodic brilliance of Davis' trumpet, which even Coltrane fails to upstage during his solo. "All Blues" is also a testament to Jimmy Cobb's light, fluid drumming, a rather unsung hero of the Kind of Blue sessions, but a most vital member of the group. - Thomas Ward
