artist: CORVUS CORAX
title Seikilos
date: 2002-10-28
label: Pica Records
Always in search of musical treasures from the past, this time CORVUS CORAX has discovered something special from ancient Greece. The name of the bands latest album was inspired by the column marking the gravesite of Seikilos, featuring a worthy inscription interlaced with notes and lyrics from some of the oldest songs originated from Europe.
Among the 12 new titles celebrating ?Seikilos? invitation to experience life to its absolute fullest, are the Chinese Emperor?s March ?Chou Chou Sheng?, ?Aia?, an old Germanic minstrel saying from the 9th century, and ?Ballade de Mercy? from Frantois Villon. The newest work from the well-traveled Berliners contains historical songs and dances dating back nearly 2500 years. CORVUS CORAX consists today of eight musicians. Five bagpipe players featuring four original members - CASTUS RABENSANG, Meister Selbfried, Venustus, and Teufel, as well as their newest addition, ARDOR VOM VENUSH_GEL, replacing the amicably and recently departed Brandan. All five also play an array of supporting instruments including the shawm, hurdy gurdy, ?Trumscheid?, and many others. Attending to the myriad of rhythm instruments are HARMANN DER DRESCHER and his colleagues HATZ and KALAUER, who with the others, combine to produce a sound comprised of more than fifty different musical instruments in making ?Seikilos?. Musically the medieval ?Big Band? steers its course between mighty pathos and playful cunning, as described so accurately by CASTUS RABENSANG, ?On one side we have kettle drums, trumpets and bagpipes; and on the other side, we have soft melodies that are sure to move ladies? hips.
