English Concert

Biography

The English Concert is an "authentic performance" ensemble, founded by harpsichordist and conductor Trevor Pinnock in 1973. The group quickly established itself as one of Britain's leading orchestras in the then-young field of performing Baroque works on Baroque instruments. The English Concert and the energetic Pinnock helped put historical performance on the charts. The orchestra has a reputation for stylish, lively, and high-quality music-making. Its sound is light, bright, and clear. Its strings usually employ no vibrato, and its winds have a woody, attractive tone that blends well with strings and with the fortepiano. Generally the orchestra applies only a light swelling on sustained string notes. In explaining the orchestra's choice to specialize in original instruments (or painstakingly authentic re-creations of them), Pinnock explains, "The answer is simple -- we wanted to use the most suitable tools for the job. These instruments were good enough for Bach -- surely they're good enough for us." In 1983, the English Concert Choir was established, to perform and record choral works with the instrumental ensemble. After 30 years leading the group, Pinnock stepped down and turned the music directorship over to Andrew Manze.

Recording for Deutsche Grammophon's "Archiv" imprint, Harmonia Mundi, and its own label, Avie, the English Concert has released over 70 albums, many of which have won top recording awards such as the Grand Prix du Disque and Grammophon Awards. With Pinnock leading, it has recorded complete symphonies of Mozart, Bach's Brandenburg Concerti and Orchestral Suites, and many Haydn symphonies and Vivaldi concertos. In addition it has participated In recordings of Haydn Masses and Handel oratorios and operas. It has toured extensively in Europe and Asia, including a 1998 25th-anniversary tour. -- Joseph Stevenson

Birth Dec 16, 1946 in Canterbury, England

Biography
A boy chorister at Canterbury Cathedral, Trevor Pinnock attended the Cathedral Choir School, and as a Foundation Scholar at the Royal College of Music, won a number of prizes for harpsichord and organ. Together with the flutist Stephen Preston and the cellist Anthony Pleeth, he made his performing debut with the Galliard Ensemble at the Royal Festival Hall in 1966 and his conducting debut at the English Bach Festival in 1973. Since 1973 he has been director of the English Concert, specializing in the performance of Baroque music on period instruments.
He has toured Europe, the U.S., Canada, Japan, and South America, and in 1988 conducted Handel's oratorio Giulio Caesare at the New York Metropolitan Opera. His recordings include Handel's Messiah, and the complete symphonies of Mozart. As a harpsichord soloist, he has recorded the complete keyboard works of Rameau and many of J.S. Bach's major keyboard works.

Pinnock was advisor and principal conductor of the National Arts Center Orchestra in Ottowa, Canada, from 1991 to 1996, and in 1993 was made an honorary Doctor of Music at Ottowa University. In 1992 he received the civil honor of Commander of the British Empire for his services to music.

Pinnock is a member of an international group of musicians who, from the 1960s onwards, have worked to establish the artistic criteria of "historically informed" performance practices, using original editions and modern research facilities to recreate the techniques and performing styles is use when the music was written. His experience has been brought to bear on the training and development of instrumentalists and singers in the music of Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart and less-well-known composers whose works are now being assessed in the light of Baroque and early Classical performance conventions. -- Roy Brewer
