One review I've found for this album reads "imagine PFM, Ozric Tentacles, Gordian Knot and King Crimson all rolled together. That's somewhere close to A Triggering Myth. Exceptional!" Exceptional it is! I'm not familiar with Gordian Knot yet, but I don't hear the others bands either. Well maybe only a second or two or just a very light sprinkle of each. What I do hear is a bit of ELP, a bit of Phillip Glass, some soundtrack music, some classical music, a bit of fusion and Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, which would be the closest comparison or reference point. Birdsongs has a more flowing and modern sound and A Triggering Myth has a more intense and classic sound. Something like that.
This is a basically a keyboard album, with melodic and rhythmic layers coming and going. Every song goes thru several changes - loud to soft, slow to fast, dramatic to reflective, combat march-like to playful. You're not going to hear any fancy fingerwork, keyboard wizardy or showy technique but instead just excellent, original and really moving compositions that really do sound like no-one else.
A Triggering Myth are a duo from Florida. Rick Eddy plays keyboards, guitar and percussion and Tim Drumheller plays keyboards, percussion and is also credited with production.
An extra and added plus are the contributions of two guests - Alberto Piras and Allesandro Bonetti, the singer and violinist from Deus Ex Machina. If you are unfamiliar with Deus Ex Machina, the vocal gymnastics of Piras will be either unsettling or joyous and wild.
The Sins of Our Saviours is their fourth album and was released in 1998 on The Laser's Edge label. They have 3 previous albums and also on same label.
From their website and in their own words "A Triggering Myth is a contemporary, progressive band with an array of musical influences ranging from the classic progressive rock bands from the 70's, European chamber music, jazz, fusion, electronic music and 20th century classical."
