Finntroll - Trollhammaren

Three years have passed since Finntroll unleashed their latest trollstorm ("Jaktens Tid") upon the world and many things have changed in their realm since. First vocalist Katla suffered a tumour of some sort in his throath which led to Tapio Wilska taking over the microphone duties. Then last year, just after finishing the recordings of the experimental "Visor Om Slutet" mini-cd, guitarist Somnium died tragically leaving another empty spot to fill in the band. With his successor Routa in the line-up Finntroll once again entered the studio in November of 2003 to finally record a new album. During those sessions the band recorded more material than "necessary" and as a result comes this pre-taster mcd entitled "Trollhammaren" (eng. The Trollhammer), including one album track and four (!) exclusive tunes. Exclusive is a truth with modification though as we are already aquainted with the song "Forsvinn du som lyser", previously an acoustic rocker and here transformed into a full-fledged metal song. Just like the original this version is fucking amazing and also of great interest as it was the last song written by Somnium for Finntroll (+ the lyrics were written by Katla). The title track of this mcd (as mentioned also to be included on the album) is the absolute highlight though and perhaps the most catchy Finntroll tune ever written. No wonder the guys choose this particular one to create a video for. That keyboard melody is worth dying for! The remaining three songs are all of absolute top quality as well. No fillers here! "Skog" is perhaps the most typical Finntroll song of the three remaining tracks (surprisingly written by newcomer Routa) and goes back to the sound of "Midnattens Windunder" with its haunting and stomping mid-tempo humppa-esque rhythms. "Helvete" differs quite a bit from the Finntroll we are used to with its jazzy feel but after two spins it hits like a punch in the face as well. Very cool! And "Hemkomst" is another brutally dark number in the "Midnattens..." vein - very grim and trollish. Need I say this mcd is essential for any fan of the band? Thought not... [/b]
