This album was recorded at a converted farmhouse deep ill the Massachusetts countryside. Events leading up to Carmen's arrival at the sleepy snow clad village of North Brookfield are bizarre, but then so are most things surrounding this motley assortment of wandering souls.
In 1973, Carmen left Los Angeles and headed for London, and there in a tiny house spent nine months rehearsing their ideas for a new concept in rock music. They spent a further six months recording two albums and following a six-week British tour headed back for the States to embark on their first American tour in the fall of '74. Appearing with more than forty various headline acts ranging from Santana and ELO to Golden Barring and Sha Na Na, Carmen presented their unique blend of rock music based on flamenco rhythms. Throughout this period Carmen were searching, not for an identity, for that they already had; but for an audience, an audience that would be receptive to their musical ideas. An appearance on Midnight Special' with David Bowie gained them wider recognition but Carmen continued their search for 'their' kind of audience. That audience provided itself when they toured 44 cities with Jethro Tull earlier this year (Yes! They were the 'other' group, the one with those weird rhythms, frenetic musicians and the guy who pounded the life out of the floor with a stick!) The 'Tull' audiences took to Carmen and showed their appreciation by demanding encores whenever time would allow. Only too often however the majority of the audiences arrived half way thru their act and left at the end wondering 'Who the hell were THEY?
When the 'Tull' tour drew to a close in Boston, Carmen found themselves 3,000 miles from either of their natural bases in L.A. or London. To record an album was imperative. Tired and exhausted from their three-month sojourn with 'Tull,' they fumed their attention to the Boston area for a suitable studio to suit their needs. Rumours that a haven could be found less than a hundred miles from Boston where they could not only record but live and work up the album bore investigation. So it was that Carmen, battered and travel weary, threaded their way along the Mass. Pike that cold and snowy March Sunday in search of sanctuary at Longview Studios, Longview Farm, North Brookfield, Mass.
That Longview proved to be perfect for Carmen's needs may be judged by this album. That this album was possible at all is no small thanks to those who in one way or another have supported, encouraged and generally spread the gospel about Carmen's music. As yet small in number, it is to the following that this album is dedicated: Skippy, Willie, Dick, Lydia, Clark, Marga, Kent, Kathy, David Bowie, Leonie, Sylvia, Keith, Guy, Steve Elson, Marc Bolan, Bruce, Doug, Mary, Dilly, Stephen Greenberg, Heather, Frank, Tony Visconti, Adele, Sam Trust, Butch Parker, Leonardo, Vince, Lou, Lyn, Norm, Marsha, Alan Grodin, Howard Siegel, Steve Love, Howard Stein, Gil, Nancy, Dennis Bisas, Paul Sheffiran, Bd Sciaky, Jeff Christie, Jody, Niles Segal, Ray Stayer, Jesse, Jeff Smith, Cynthia, Janis Schacht, Roberta Skopp, Scott Muni, Alison Steele, Sandy Lieberman, Irv Lukin, Noel Becketti, Kip Bohne, Ian Anderson, Ian Dove, Eric Van Lusthader, Steve Carr, Cinnie Morgan, Michael Mayor, Steve Bronstein, Paul Brown, Terry Ellis, and especially to Charlie for his mercurial faith and foresight.
