Bryan Ferry, not having the same success with his solo career, reformed with is cohorts and prime members, Woodwindist Andy Mackay, Guitarist Phil Manzanera and drummer Paul Thompson. First album released by the band was the disco flavored Manifesto. The new musical direction and tour took its toll on drummer Paul Thompson who left the band, so the band had to resort to session musicians to fill the void around the three remaining permanent members.

Next album Flesh And Blood, was a slightly more ambitious album, spawning three hit singles, of which one included a reworking of Wilson Pickett's "In The Midnight Hour". Despite the success, the writing on the wall was clear for the remaining members of the band. Phil Manzanera, the main guitarist in Roxy's first tenure, now had the accompaniment of a second guitarist Neil Hubbard (albeit as a rhythm guitarist) and the main members seemed to be going through the motions. It was a stroke of genius that the band, still had a bit of magic left in them. And with that stroke, came Roxy Music's last album Avalon.

For years, Roxy Music had changed the perception of what music critics and music fans thought of "art-rock". So ahead of their times, the band would enjoy major success around the world, but only moderate success in the US (What were we listening to at the time?). Roxy Music was one of the main contributors to the new wave/romantic era that seen bands like Ultravox, Japan, China Crisis, The Cars, Duran Duran, Gary Numan steal the bands thunder by scoring major hits worldwide in the Eighties, but a band like Roxy Music, was like their fellow peers were dinosaurs amongst a plethora teenie pop bands.

Avalon, the last album that Roxy Music would ever do, was a sight of brilliance and one of the last gasps of the Seventies era prog bands, but unlike their peers, they quit while they were still ahead. US College radio picked up on three singles on this album, two went to become worldwide hit (except here?) the smooth R&Bish title track (UK #13), the pastoral album opener, "More Than This" (UK #8) and the panty wetting "Take A Chance With Me". Avalon, continuously flows seamlessly together, in which nothing seems out of place.

Roxy Music, spent most their existence as a cult favorite in the US, scoring on only three singles, "Love Is The Drug" (#30), "Dance Away" (#44) and the last single "Over You" (#80). Art-rock bands are not supposed to score hit singles, but Roxy Music was a special band that had plenty of hits abroad that were a bit more ambitious then your normal hit singles of the Seventies. But with this album, the remaining core figured that they could do no better as for a band know for their class, placed Roxy Music in legendary status by closing with another fine chapter in prog history.
