My Favorite Things [Atlantic]
Date of Release Oct 24, 1960 - Oct 26, 1960
This CD, a straight reissue of the original LP, is the earliest full album by the classic John Coltrane Quartet with pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones and (at this point) bassist Steve Davis. The 13-minute title cut essentially became Coltrane's theme song, featuring his soprano over an endless vamp; this version is tamer than what would be coming up but is still quite passionate. Of the other songs, a dissonant "Summertime" is given a powerful treatment with Coltrane's tenor in the forefront and his versions of "But Not for Me" and "Everytime We Say Goodbye" (the latter ballad played by 'Trane on soprano) should not be overlooked. It's a very significant and historical release. - Scott Yanow
