AMG REVIEW: Tenor-saxophonist John Coltrane and guitarist Kenny Burrell are the alleged co-leaders of the two sessions included on this two-LP set but actually the second date (originally titled The Cats) was really under pianist Tommy Flanagan's direction; in fact Flanagan contributed four of the five compositions. Throughout, though, Coltrane is really the most significant soloist, whether on a brief duet with Burrell ("Why Was I Born"), in a quintet or (with the addition of trumpeter Idrees Sulieman) a sextet. - Scott Yanow

John Coltrane - Sax (Tenor)

Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane

John Coltrane recorded many interesting jam session-type dates in the 1950s. This matchup with guitarist Kenny Burrell (in a quintet with pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb) finds the group stretching out on two Flanagan compositions, Burrell's "Lyresto," and the standard "I Never Knew." In addition, Coltrane and Burrell play a short duet on "Why Was I Born." Overall, the music is excellent for the time period, with Coltrane displaying some of his sheets of sound and Burrell sounding inspired by 'Trane's presence. It was formerly available as the first half of a two-LP set, Kenny Burrell/John Coltrane. - Scott Yanow
