REVIEWS: OH LUNA MEIN

Review von www.spiralarchive.com
Follow up to the widely tipped 'black metal' opera album 'Die Liebe Gottes', which was critically well received in their native Germany. Mixing gothic and black metal along with a heavy dose of romantic melancholy, that draws on many influences. Yes, we do have grinding guitars and growling vox to satisfy the satantic masses but they shift from dark to light like the waning moon. Classical keys and strings pierce the gloom and lift the proceedings in a Dead Can Dance way. But even with all the pounding, there is always a melodic element to save the music from turning into a dirge. The dual vocals and an ear for a catchy black opus aimed at the darkly clad hordes will certainly get the dancefloors heaving.

My German is extremely rusty, so I can't really tell you what they sing about, but I can tell you what I hear from listening to this excellent CD. First off, I want to give praise to Samsas Traum for releasing what I believe is the best full lenght album of 2000. The work on Oh Luna Mein was mostly accomplished by Alexander Kaschte, although it can easily be heard that he wasn't alone in it's production. The record stands out like a soundtrack to an epic anime, something with Captain Harlock. The album rests upon operatic style gothic-industrial-doom with harsh screams and powerful choruses. The opening track to this Captain Harlock story of my mind would easily be " Mein Flaggschiff in die Sonne," with it's long instrumental intro, followed by a powerful lead in by the singer. Listen to the way he speaks this song, from the first passage "Luna Tausendschon!" till the last syllables of "Oh Luna mein!" What I found really different on this release was the inclusion of the spoken-only track "Das verlorene Kind," a text written by Lydia Budnick (who also sings on this album). I still haven't figured out the words yet, but my trusty German/French dictionary is getting alot of use on this one. The CD comes with two remixed tracks, both are of the songs that rock the most. Personally, I prefer the original of "Fur Immer," since the club remix tends to lose alot of the punch that the original possessed. I'm debating about the remix for "Thanathan und Athnasia," since both are equally intense but different, these are also the best tracks on the album, but most every other song come in a close second. When I receive CDs that have picked my curiosity from only a listening of a single, in this case "Fur Immer," I play the odds that I may find one or two other solid songs on the album that will catch my ears. Oh Luna Mein succeeded on every level, casting upon my mind the soundtrack to a little inner Captain Harlock phantasie. If you enjoy dynamic music, that hints towards some of Vrag Vikernes last vocal work, with keyboards reminiscent of Die Verbannten Kinder Evas first release than this will quite simply be the album for you. If you don't know of any of the previous artists, then trust me :)< Seriously though, the downside to this is if you don't comprehend German, and you are more lyricly bounded by your tastes you might not enjoy this record, however if you follow the sound this album is extremely dynamic and will reach you on many levels. By the way, the final track to my movie would be "Thanathan und Athanasia."
